Note-Taking

Recording Lectures (with Your Instructor's Permission)

Recording Tools

If your professor speaks quickly or is difficult to understand, you might consider asking permission to record lectures, discussions, or Zoom sessions.  Remember that you need permission from your instructor before you record.

In-person Classes

Here are some tools that you can use to record classes (again, with your instructor's permission):

  • Audacity - This is a free program that you can download and use on your computer to record lectures.
  • Phone Apps - There are several free apps available for iPhone, Android, and Google Pixel phones.
  • Smart Pens - These are really cool.  You can record the lecture while you write notes on a special notepad.

Online Classes

If you attend lectures via Zoom, ask your instructor to record the class and provide the link to students.  It may take a little while for the recording to render, so please be patient.  If your instructor does not provide the link by the day after class, send your instructor a quick email.  Remember to be polite and respectful when you do.  You can also use a smart pen for Zoom sessions.

Livescribe is one brand of smart pen.  If you are interested in learning more about this smart pen, here is a video:
