Citing your sources is important because...

By providing a citation to where you found the information you want to use, you are:

showing your instructor all the hard work you did. It shows them you know how to:

  • evaluate lots of results to select the best ones.
  • to do a rigorous search to find the best materials.

giving credit to the author (or authors) who wrote the material

  • you wouldn't like for someone to steal your work and take all the credit, would you?

helping other's find what you used

  • in case they are interested in reading it also!

avoiding plagiarism.

  • if you are caught using other's work without giving credit, you can fail an assignment, fail a class, be suspended, or dismissed from the institution.
