By providing a citation to where you found the information you want to use, you are:

showing your instructor all the hard work you did. It shows them you know how to:
- evaluate lots of results to select the best ones.
- to do a rigorous search to find the best materials.
giving credit to the author (or authors) who wrote the material
- you wouldn't like for someone to steal your work and take all the credit, would you?
helping other's find what you used
- in case they are interested in reading it also!
avoiding plagiarism.
- if you are caught using other's work without giving credit, you can fail an assignment, fail a class, be suspended, or dismissed from the institution.
